How To Start The Goal Setting Process
What do you want to achieve in 1 years time? 5 years time? Maybe even 10 years time?
Many of us have good intentions to set goals. You say’ I’ll set some goals.’ The most famous time of the year that springs to mind is the New Year’s Resolution time! Many people make their New Year’s Resolutions and within one month they are broken. The most popular ones are to stop smoking and lose weight.
Goals are statements or intentions of what you want to achieve some time in the future. Goals must be
- measurable
- achievable
- realistic
- specific and
- have a time frame
You can set goals during any time in the year.
Why not start right now? Grab a sheet of blank paper and a pen.
Where to start….
1. Choose the areas of your life – put these as main headings. You could write Health, Wealth, Personal, Relationships, Hobbies and Business etc. You can think of others.
2. Under each heading list the things you want to achieve.
For example under Health you may write lose weight, stop smoking, eat better, exercise more and make health checkups (doctor, dentist, and chiropractor).
3. Now take each one of these and start to be specific.
For example, let’s look at lose weight. You could write I want to lose 5kg over the next 10 weeks. Does this goal match our criteria listed above?
It is measurable. You will be able to see at the end of the 10 week period is you have lost 5kg.
It is achievable. On average it is possible to lose 500g each week.
It is realistic. The amount you can lose each week is not too little or too much. Many people can lose this if they are overweight.
It is specific. The statement is very clear about what you want to achieve.
It has a timeframe. You have given yourself 10 weeks to achieve this.
In my next Carnival Blog post I’ll look at how to achieve your goals using a step by step process.
See you next time.
